I have now picked up my new T-Roc and already something is not working correctly. I press the 'Nav' button on the infotainment and it tells me that I need the 'Shop' I do that and it says 'Unable to start Shop. "Maximum privacy" is selected, see attached.

Is this a 'We Connect' issue or something else?
Also is 'We Connect' compulsory to sue and if I don't use it will I still be able to use the standard functions like Nav etc?

Not sure if you're aware or not? But it sounds as if your car hasn't got sat-nav & that's why it's sending you to the shop.
I'm not sure if volkswagens shop is working yet as a forum member in the past couldn't install sat-nav, nor could the dealership.
He had originally ordered his car with sat-nav but it came without it.
He ended up having to get another car.

We connect isn't necessary, quite a few never use it.
I used it for about one day and thought it wasn't that useful 🤷‍♂️

You can change the maximum privacy settings to enable this to the farthest man with a dot on the right hand side of the options. I had to do this on mine because the dealer was in such a rush to get me on the road he assumed that I knew all this because I work in specialised tech. Working in specialised tech makes me wonder who designed this system and how they kept their job because it is not at all intuitive. However once you set it to be able to use your location it will unlock various features and functions including the ability to register you as a primary user and registering the keys, etc. In all honesty if the car has CarPlay or Android Auto functionality then a reasonable proportion of of the functionality of the MiB system becomes redundant as you will tend to use the mapping on your phone, any music streaming service from there, messaging services and the like.

Some cars come fitted with Sat Nav while others are Sat Nav READY. It used to be that cars with Sat Nav fitted had a different Infotainment system which meant people who hadn't bought a car with Sat Nav as standard or hadn't specified it as a factory option couldn't easily decide later to upgrade to have Sat Nav. Now all cars have the necessary hardware (Infotainment) fitted as standard and the Sat Nav is automatically enabled by the factory on higher spec cars, or as a factory option, while those cars which are only Sat Nav ready can be upgraded after delivery via the VW Shop. Doing so actually involves purchasing a software license key (via a 3rd party through the shop) which is used to enable the Sat Nav.

As I understand it, the key is configured so as to work with only one car and requires the car to have a connection to We Connect for the built-in SIM to enable activation. This is where the "Maximum privacy" bit comes in, as that setting blocks all connectivity from the SIM. The owner's manual describes how to change the privacy setting and what each level allows. This has been discussed in another topic on the forum ...

I found out that part of the problem was that I was being logged in as a guest. As soon as I logged in as me then that message disappeared. When I go to the shop now there is nothing relating to the sat nav, either to buy or anything else. I have contacted the dealer and he will speak to someone this morning and get back to me

We connect is not compulsory but it is useful in allowing the car to do software updates and you can sync sat nav with your phone and navigate to destinations from your phone and the journey tracker and stats are useful (if your dealer gave you a data plug)
What needs to happen is you need to be primary user of your car and not a guest and also you need to reduce from maximum privacy if you want things like shop etc to work it should explain in the user app (does in my golf) it wasn’t like this in the past but the new mk8 golf brought many of these changes about

Well it seems that my car does not have sat nav by default. If I want it I can pay £950, although I can't at the moment as the VW Shop is not working.
I can use google maps via the android app so that's what I'm going to do. I really don't see why it should cost that much. The Honda had it as standard and free updates for 3 years.

I have now uninstalled the We Connect app and I can still use the car and some other bits so I'll stick with it as it is.

I am surprised Dave my two golfs have had it as standard and I have only had the discover radio system in mine as one was a SE Nav and my current one is a Life
Looking again at the website and the configurator it would appear the black edition comes with the ready 2 discover radio and I assume that one does not have sat nav as standard
The active has it and the design and upper models from what I can see
Sorry about this if the dealer did not inform you at order time as car built i would be speaking to dealer principal as the car is so new

£950 is an awful lot to pay for something you can get for free on a mobile phone, so I would strongly suggest you get your phone connected to the car and try out some of the other Sat Nav apps besides Google Maps such a Waze if you haven't already done so. Lots of people on the forum have gone down this route, even some with the VW Sat Nav ! Perhaps you should start a new topic specifically to discuss the pros and cons of the various apps that people are using.

I had a look on the VW web site and was very surprised and disappointed to see that they no longer have brochures or pricelists in PDF format for downloading or even just viewing. I aways felt the pricelist was the best place to see which models had which equipment as standard and which options were available and at what price. I guess this is another reflection of VW's new sales strategy with owners adding 'equipment' through the Shop after delivery.

However, as Daniel said above, the configurator shows the Black Edition has a 'Ready 2 Discover' radio, where the key word is Ready as described in my previous reply.

Thanks for the replies. I tried to go online and search for the VW shop to check the cost but I couldn't find it. The phone connects ok and the radio is fine too. The non existant onboard Sat Nav is not a deal breaker but it would have been nice to have it. The sales guy at the dealership said he uses Google maps as it's better than the VW one anyway, so I will continue with that and investigate Waze as you suggest Impala.

Thanks again for all your input it's much appreciated.

I thought that Sat Nav came as standard on the ‘R’. I’ve got Sat Nav but never use it. Google Maps etc are a much better option.

I've installed Waze now so I can use Google maps or Waze although Waze is owned by Google but has less fuss about it.

I've now uninstalled we connect, I realise I can do without it.

The Active has sat nav as standard but Black Edition and Design do not it's an extra. The Active was my first choice but wasn't available from stock. You'll see my signature has now returned and can see what I have.
