I don’t often need to use the Sat Nav to find my way around, but two recent experiences have left me wondering if other T-Roc owners have had similar issues.
1. On a trip down to Glasgow Airport (which I know my way to), I wanted to stop off at the M&S foodhall in Dumbarton. I’d only been there a couple of times previously and I wasn’t sure how to find it. So I tried typing M&S Dumbarton into the Sat Nav. It offered me branches at Milngavie and Paisley. I tried again and noticed the Foodhall category appear after I'd typed M&S. I selected that but still no joy. Thinking the store might have closed in the 6 years since I’d last been there, I stopped the car on the outskirts of Dumbarton and used my phone to search for it. Sure enough, M&S Simply Food, Dumbarton came up straight away. So then I tried entering M&S Simply Food on the Sat Nav. No joy. Finally, I took the postcode from my phone search, entered that and the car knew where to go.
2. Planning a trip to a hospital in Glasgow, I first searched for it by name on the VW app on my phone. No joy. Then I tried the name of the estate where it’s located, zoomed in on the map and the hospital name appeared. I tapped on that and was able to send the location to the car. I went out to the car, switched on the ignition and a notification of the received destination appeared, including the name of the hospital. Options to enter a name or view the location/route were offered. I initially chose the enter name option but then thought why bother, as I’d already seen the name displayed. So I tapped the back button instead. I then couldn’t find the received destination anywhere: apparently it had been discarded. So then I tried a new search using the Sat Nav. Neither the hospital name, the estate name nor the postcode was recognised. So I went back indoors and used my phone to send the destination again. After that, I managed to save it as a favourite in the car.
I have to say that the route guidance worked perfectly in both instances. It was setting up the destinations in the first place that was less than user-friendly. To have to use a phone or other device as part of the process - which one can’t do whilst driving - shouldn’t have been necessary. It seems to me that the Sat Nav’s index of place names is somewhat lacking. One wonders if there’s any point purchasing the Voice Control option...
