But with its smallest SUV, the German brand is hoping to show that it can do flair as well as functionality.
The T-Roc competes with the likes of the Nissan Qashqai and Peugeot 3008, as well as other Volkswagen Group cars such as the Audi Q2, Seat Ateca and Skoda Karoq.
To help it stand out in this busy marketplace, the T-Roc has a more raked tailgate than most rivals, wheels of up to 19in (20in ones will follow), aluminium exterior detailing and a distinctive new front-end design with a new style of daytime running lights (at least on high-end models).
However, Volkswagen is also hoping to tempt potential buyers by offering a wide range of petrol and diesel engines, lots of standard equipment and the option of four-wheel drive. So, how does the T-Roc stack up and which version is best?
