New model for Palmela - the Volkswagen T-Roc.

In the second half of 2017, the factory in Portugal is set to start production of a compact SUV based on the modular transverse matrix (MQB).

The Volkswagen plant in the Portuguese town of Palmela will play a major role in the Volkswagen Brand's SUV campaign, as Thomas Ulbrich, the Board Member responsible for Production and Logistics, explained at Volkswagen Autoeuropa's 25th anniversary celebrations. At the event, held in the second week of December and attended by Portugal's President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Prime Minister António Costa, Ulbrich announced plans for a compact SUV based on the modular transverse matrix (MQB) to be produced in Portugal, starting in the second half of 2017. Along with the Scirocco and Sharan, it will be the third Volkswagen Brand model to roll off the production line at the factory outside Lisbon. Autoeuropa also currently produces the Seat Alhambra.

Since it opened in 1991, Palmela has produced around 2.3 million cars.

From what I can see, it's quite handsome in design, unlike the fugly looking Juke. I hope that Volkswagen continues to bring us solid and functional designs and avoid the onslaught of fruity looking cars.
