Red line / screen shift

Post by Marylatte92 » Tue Aug 13, 2019 8:45 am

I previously posted here regarding the red line on my infotainment screen , the screen was then fully replaced under warranty.

When starting my car up I noticed that on car play the screen has shifted to the right cutting off the time. Does anyone else have this issue when using car play?

I’ve restarted my phone and waited a while before starting my car up again but it’s still cut of the time.

Can’t guarantee this is the issue but CarPlay negotiates a “visible area” with the car on initial registration. This (I think) gets saved and never updated because it should never need to be. So it may be using an incorrect area with the new screen, even though the hardware is the same. Sounds weird, I know, but try going into settings on iPhone and removing the connection called Volkswagen, then set it up again. It should trigger the “visible area” negotiation again and put it back in the correct boundaries of the screen.

Unfortunately it didn’t give me the option to adjust the screen, even when I first purchased the car it automatically sized itself to the screen...I was only able to change the order of the apps displayed.

When sat on the passengers side the numbers don’t look as cut off so I wonder if it’s just the angle I’m looking at it from the drivers side? But I don’t know why it’s something that’s I’ve just noticed...is it something you’ve noticed on your infotainment?

Sorry, didn’t mean to confuse you: the “visible area” thing is not something you change, it’s handled automatically by the phone talking to the car’s system. Did you try removing the connection and setting it up again?

I’ve never noticed any off-canvas UI elements but I have only ever used the new version of CarPlay (only available in beta right now) and by the way, you’re all in for a treat come September as it’s bloody brilliant. It has blown the new Android Auto our the water already and it’s not even released.

Something else that just occurred to me: is the display panel in your infotainment screen maybe not in the right place?! I’d be having none of that! I’d be straight back to the dealership that replaced it!

Ah ok thank you.

I’ve not had the best of luck with my car , and the thought did cross my mind that maybe it’s not been placed as centered as before. But honestly , the thought of going back to the dealership makes me want to just get rid of the car all together and start taking a bus lol!!

Basically any round number is slightly cropped from the drivers vision side , as the images show....if you’ve not noticed the same issue then I guess it’s back to VW I go...

I’m not sure what you mean about the beta version? But whatever is it I guess it sounds like something to look forward to!

I think he is talking about the Beta version of IOS 13. The full version is coming out in the fall as Apple says. There are a lot of new features including better Apple Maps and all sorts of other things. Have a look at the last Apple meeting on Youtube, that will tell you about it all.

It’s a new version of CarPlay that will automatically update when you update your iPhone to iOS13 in September (no need to go back to VW for it).

It’s a massive update that changes everything for the better. You get a new dashboard screen that shows little segments for your nav, music, next turn direction, etc. It’s all much better presented and if you use your phone, it won’t automatically change the app on the infotainment to match what’s open on the phone, it’s now completely independent. There’s dark and light modes now too (don’t think that is in the current version?) Siri doesn’t take up the whole screen either, she’s just a small overlay that appears/disappears. Lots more smaller improvements as well. Probably the best thing Apple has done in a very long time.

Probably the most exciting thing (but sadly this relies on VW actually implementing it) is the ability to have CarPlay display additional stuff elsewhere in the car, like in the digital dash if you have one. So they can put Google/Apple/Waze in the navigation mode, turn-by-turn directions inside of your speedo/rev, etc. I’m not confident VW will bother to implement this for our cars though, I think they’ll be greedy and use it as an enticing feature for newer models. But hey: I’ll be happy to be surprised!
