2.0 dsg gearbox hot warning light came on

Post by Fidds t roc » Fri Aug 02, 2019 7:23 pm

Travelled from Norwich to southend today with delays on A12 stop start around 20 to 30 minutes.
Around 10 minutes from end journey warning came up in Speedo rev panel saying warning ref dsg gearbox, also said I could continue, but left yellow fault light on
Stopped car and left for 10 minutes, fault light now gone.
Very sad to see this as some delays are much longer than this on holdups.
For the record I do not keep putting selector in neutral or park in-between stops, perhaps I should.
Travelling back to Norwich Sunday so will see what happens.
Car booked in Monday for checkup at VW agent.
Anyone had same problem. ?
Ps love the car,18 months old now.

I think if I was stationary for 20-30 minutes, I would switch off. Even stop/start system will most likely keep the engine running after a few minutes.

I had similar experience for over an hour and half. Just kept engine running but moved shift to neutral when stationary. Did not seem to object and no messages.

Sorry,to make myself clear, the stoppage of upto 20 to 30 mins was stop start, not one stop of 20 30 mins ok.
Regards

ok - thanks for clarifying. But how long did you sit with the engine running and the DSG presumably in Drive (D) ? I don't recall if the manual recommends against doing that.

MAN (Volkswagen) trucks have automated gearboxes, 2 pedals. There is still a normal clutch system in the drive train.
When the truck is stationary, the gearbox still has a gear engaged with the clutch open. In effect, the same as sitting with your foot on the clutch pedal hard to the floor.
If sat in a traffic jam for too long without selecting neutral, the dash will display a transmission overheating message.
It's the clutch that is overheating. As soon as neutral is selected, the clutch is closed and the overheating message goes away.
DSG transmissions are similar, select neutral when stationary for a prolonged period.

Thanks for the info..
Have had the car,a ex demo from VW Robinson's.have now had it 19 months and done 11000 miles.
Yesterday the traffic was stop start every few seconds so operating lever to neutral would have been continuous.
I have never out the car in neutral when in traffic
I also switch off the stop start when in stop start traffic situations.
I think I have read somewhere ref putting car in neutral or park everyone you stop.
So do I now just select stop start and leave on with engine starter operating a couple of 100 times in next jam ? Or select neutral or park in next stop start jam.
I live in a country city so do not spend many times in this situation.
I really like this car and probably keep it,so I don't want problems when warranty runs out,is starter motors etc.
Cheers

Doesn’t sound right to me. I think you need to have it checked over.

Just did a local test run 18 miles.just before stopping the warning cam on again, hot dsg,but you can drive on.
Stopped car 5cmins light off.
Also check engine temp setting on dash, reading 104 degrees.
Hey ho
Hopefully home tomorrow.
Also went into local VW garage to ask ref putting in neutral, was told not necessary with dsg box.
Update next week after local VW check out.
