Oh dear, I keep reading all of these threads where people go on about their horn! “It’s only a single tone horn”! Wanting to upgrade it to a two-tone one... In truth, I’ve had my car over six months now (luckily trouble free) and I’ve never used my horn - not once! Don’t even know what it sounds like! I imagine it’s loud enough - otherwise it wouldn’t meet type approval so why all the fuss?
I agree with you, I have used my horn many times as there a few humped backed bridges near to where i live.I dont see what the problem is it sounds fine to me.

behind the bumper under the headlight on the left side i think
Correct, You need to remove the LH fog light to get to it.
That's correct, once you've popped out the nearside fog light you can see the horn just behind it towards the centre of the vehicle. As long as your hands aren't like gorillas you can easily get in to remove it !

I simply replaced that pathetic single horn with twin horns from Hella.
I installed my twin setup with the correct VW plug and socket, so its a 5 minute job to remove it all and fit back the original single horn later when I come to sell the vehicle. That's just in case my next vehicle purchase also has a single horn ! :o

See the previous posts regarding twin horns viewtopic.php?f=8&t=1117
@tigertony - can you provide details of the correct plug and socket you used please, as I have a replacement horn to fit, and having the correct t plug and socket beforehand would be very useful, thanks

@Hawkeye

The connector was one that I salvaged from an old VW horn I had kicking about. Being an electrical engineer I guess it was easy for me to modify it and connect it to the new horn(s).

I carefully cut off the small connector from the old horn, soldered on some new cables to this connector to make it into a short flying lead. These new cables then simply connect to the new horn(s) by soldering. A little epoxy resin (Araldite) and heat shrink sleeving sealed the back of the connector up to make it all waterproof again.

I did try to search for a new connector but the only place I could find them available was on AliExpress over in China ! Even then I wasn't convinced they were a good quality and also I wasn't prepared to wait 4-6 weeks for delivery.
I'm sure you can get them in UK from some specialist but I dread to think what price they will charge for just one :(

VW have used the same horn connection for the last 10 years or more so you could pick a good cheap one up from your local vehicle dismantlers yard or even ebay.
If you need help in making a lead up, let me know.

Brilliant, thanks so much for that, yes, very useful seeing what the connector looks like, think I'll see what i can get off of eBay before trying to fit mine, or try some of the UK connector suppliers I know of to see what they may be able to come up with.

UPDATE: Just had a quick look - does the plug look like this on the inside by any chance?

Nope, that wont fit. That's a female part of a connector which is already attached to the vehicle. We require the male part which is usually moulded onto the VW horn.

This is the part that I removed from an old horn to use as a connector. ( The bit with the white dot on it) .
Its a moulded part which is attached to the horn. Its easy enough to remove with a junior hacksaw and then simply solder a couple of wires to it.

This is looking down at the plug showing the pins.

There's plenty available on ebay for under a tenner if anyone requires one. Heres one I found in less than a minute which is perfect for modifying :-

I might even pick a few up myself and prepare them ready for anyone if they are interested in changing their horn ?
