Stand alone device to connect my T-Roc

Post by kevd » Fri Apr 09, 2021 11:35 am

Hi peeps,

I connect my T-Roc to the world using my phone, but obviously it is only connected when my phone is in range. Is there a device I can purchase and install that can keep my vehicle connected all the time?

Sorry if this question has been asked and answered before.

Thanks
KevD

Do you mean something like VW We Connect, which enables you to connect to your T Roc by the internet from your PC, Mac, Phone?

In my opinion, the best device is the Huawei E8372 but there are numerous posts on the forum about that device and others. Do a search for Huawei, and as a teaser start with this viewtopic.php?f=8&t=1975&p=23983&hilit= ... 372#p23983.

The E8372 acts as a mobile wireless router (wingle) and has a physical package similar to a USB memory stick, plugs into a USB port for power and is totally fit and forget. I have mine attached using a short (about 10-12 cm) USB cable and leave it permanently attached and lying out of sight at the back of the small storage cubby below the heater controls.

The car connects to the wingle via a wifi link, and the wingle then connects to the internet via 3/4G phone network using any suitable data SIM. Other wifi enabled devices such as tablets or mobiles can also connect to the wingle for internet access. If you shop around you can find 'offers' giving an amount of free data each month - I got one from Three giving 200MB each month, which is more than enough for the car and it hasn't cost me a penny over 2years.

You can also remove it from the car and use it with a laptop/tablet (with USB port) anywhere.

Or you could also use a mobile wifi unit with a data sim, (connect up to 10 devices) no usb required, and it uses its own rechargeable battery

That's just the same as I suggested other than the USB connection which is only used for power. From personal experience, I found the rechargeable battery devices ran down very quickly and would not charge sufficiently on short journeys. I tried 2 in case the first was faulty.

Added to that, the device(s) I tried and returned would often not wake when I switched on the ignition and I had to manually press the power button. I originally had high hopes for the battery devices for use away from the car, but they were just not practical.
