When I’ve got this in the past I’ve just done it through the dealer but I’m going to get a quote from ALA to compare. I have a couple of questions though.

I’m taking the car on a four year PCP deal. The car I’ve bought was RRP £23,865 although I’ve paid a bit less for it.

ALA offer ‘RETURN TO INVOICE’ GAP insurance and ‘VEHICLE REPLACEMENT’ GAP insurance. The quote engine for each asks you to input the value and the years of coverage you want and suggests (for me) a level of cover of £17,500. My questions:

1. What level of cover did you choose? Their suggestion?
2. What period did you choose? (I doubt I’ll keep the car the full 4 years)

Thanks in advance!

No idea, the GAP insurance I bought gets you a brand new replacement of the same spec as the one being written off, so "level of cover" is both irrelevant and meaningless. I guess it's whatever you expect the maximum shortfall to be between the insurance payout and the cost to replace. With PCP though, I believe it only clears your outstanding finance, which seems potty to me (unless the price for that is considerably cheaper than for like-for-like replacement).

I was incredibly lucky in that I haggled hard with my dealership and they were very willing.

They added £200 to my Part Ex, thereby discounting GAP by £200.

I got 4 years cover from ALA instead of three from dealer and a saving of £163. Dealer charge £399 ALA £236 but 4 years instead of 3 years from stealer.

A very good deal. ALA and Car2Cover appear to be the market leaders and always better than a "car dealer's " offer.
