When I’ve got this in the past I’ve just done it through the dealer but I’m going to get a quote from ALA to compare. I have a couple of questions though.

I’m taking the car on a four year PCP deal. The car I’ve bought was RRP £23,865 although I’ve paid a bit less for it.

ALA offer ‘RETURN TO INVOICE’ GAP insurance and ‘VEHICLE REPLACEMENT’ GAP insurance. The quote engine for each asks you to input the value and the years of coverage you want and suggests (for me) a level of cover of £17,500. My questions:

1. What level of cover did you choose? Their suggestion?
2. What period did you choose? (I doubt I’ll keep the car the full 4 years)

Thanks in advance!

No idea, the GAP insurance I bought gets you a brand new replacement of the same spec as the one being written off, so "level of cover" is both irrelevant and meaningless. I guess it's whatever you expect the maximum shortfall to be between the insurance payout and the cost to replace. With PCP though, I believe it only clears your outstanding finance, which seems potty to me (unless the price for that is considerably cheaper than for like-for-like replacement).

I also had an ALA quote yesterday for 'Vehicle Replacement Gap Insurance' [rather than 'Return to Invoice'] by following a link using Money Saving Expert's Code MSE25 for a 4 year policy costing just £200.25 to cover my £25,000 T-Roc. However I have set a claim limit of £17,500 so I am still comparing the premium from other companies before committing. I think other companies will offer similar cover but with an UNLIMITED claim limit!, not that I would expect to need more than £17.5K if claiming close to the end of the 4 year period based on the anticipated depreciation of a VW T-Roc over that period.

My dealer had offered me a 3 year policy for £199 which I have declined.

I was incredibly lucky in that I haggled hard with my dealership and they were very willing.

They added £200 to my Part Ex, thereby discounting GAP by £200.

I have now researched the market and chosen to take out a 4 year CAR2COVER 'Vehicle Replacement Gap Insurance' policy for my £25K T-Roc with 'UNLIMITED' claim limit at a cost of £200.88 which included a 5% discount code FB5 . Following a telephone discussion with Car2Cover, I also negotiated an additional 2% discount to price match my ALA quote... ;).

Whilst browsing the Car2Cover website I noted some interesting information in their online Blog viz:

See the 16th August blog regarding Premia Solutions..... some UK dealerships are linked to the Dublin based division of this broker which is still trading, but beware!

I got 4 years cover from ALA instead of three from dealer and a saving of £163. Dealer charge £399 ALA £236 but 4 years instead of 3 years from stealer.

A very good deal. ALA and Car2Cover appear to be the market leaders and always better than a "car dealer's " offer.
