Manchester to London...58.7 mpg. London to Manchester...49.0 mpg. Why? It’s obvious: one is down-hill, one is uphill. Just look at the map!

On the way home from work tonight, I had a sneaky look at the 'since last fill up' even though I still have just under half a tank left.

40.0 mpg, a new high, up from 38+ the previous two times :D

The Tesco good stuff is obviously working, and I feel like it's got more punch too, certainly felt lively on the deserted motorway this morning

The only times I ever used Tesco petrol, I got crap mileage from it. That was in my old mk6 SRI1.4 Astra, it usually cost me 3 to 4 mpg on a tank. I would sooner drive 3 miles further from home and get the Asda petrol, I get better mileage with that. Local running on my 1.0 L T-roc gets me 38.9 mpg.

I agree with you mvk - however in a recent test their premium fuel - Tesco Momentum - came out as well as brands such as BP Ultimate, Shell Optimax etc. Tesco Momentum is also used by a number of racing teams as it gives best performance with their tuned engines. Odd eh? No idea about standard fuels though.

I saw in an article the other day that apparently Sainsbury's are teaming up with Esso for their fuel sometime in the near future (Esso will be doing Nectar points, BP having opted out from 1st June).

I'll still prefer BP or Shell in mine though.

Tesco cheap for me has always seemed to be fine. Maybe I will try the premium just to see if there is any difference.

Following up helpful contributions from Potsy and Hawkeye I decided last night to change the habit of a lifetime and filled up with Tesco Momentum instead of their standard unleaded that I have always used. Guess what? It feels like the car is performing better. I wonder if I could I be imagining that the car feels like it is running more smoothly and is more responsive. But it does. On this morning's standard commute from home to work (11 miles and a mix of motorway and A roads average speed 27 mph) my mpg was 42.8 which is about 10% better than usual. It's a bit early to come to a clear conclusion but first impressions are positive.

Grrralph, I always use Shell Nitro Premium fuel for many years whether petrol or diesel. On my last run to the south coast my car indicated 53.5 mpg going and 51.5 mpg on returning. Mostly motorway and A roads. I filled the fuel tank and did some local trips before departing, did some travel in Dorset and on my return travelled locally before again fuelling the car. The tank to tank was 46.7 mpg. I am happy with the fuel economy. For me it's more about the additives and detergents that have been developed to not only lubricate the fuel system parts but clean the components better than standard fuels. The price is more expensive but I have not been disappointed with performance, economy or problems with any fuel / exhaust system components.
