Brexit - inport duty?

Post by YO62Roc » Thu Jul 11, 2019 2:03 pm

Hi

Those of us with current orders for delivery after October 2019 will in the event of No Deal be presented with an additional cost on the invoice of 10%.

What if anything have other people done to ameliorate this.

My situation is a private distant (online via Orange Wheels) sale from a main VW dealer, so the The Consumer Contracts Regulations 2014, should protect me and I should be able to walk away with a full refund either because of import duty increase or the “rooooooing” problems with a full refund.

When I asked my dealer they have been silent, VW have not replied to my email although they have commented in the past to the media https://www.shropshirestar.com/news/mot ... ost-extra/

Any thoughts or comments from your dealerships.

There is a disclaimer on my order form stating that I can cancel in the event of this happening.
Mine is also a distant sale with a main VW dealer but via Carfile rather than Orange Wheels.
I'm hoping mine will arrive before it.

I think the distance buying thing you refer to is time limited to a few weeks. It is meant as a cooling off period for online sales and is not intended for car purchases with delivery dates many months down the road, even if ordered through an online broker.

However, I think most manufacturers will be obliged to give customers the chance to cancel orders and get a full refund, but perhaps they might only allow it for orders placed before a specific date.

The best way to avoid this is for customers to shop around other brands to determine other manufacturers positions. Some cars may not be affected.

If sufficient numbers of customers make it known to their VW dealers that they are inclined to cancel and find an alternative car without the 10% hike, the word may get passed back to VW and provoke a rethink. Can they really afford tens of thousands of lost sales in the UK ?

Presumably, if VW cannot absorb the duty for existing orders they would then put pressure on the German government who would in turn put pressure on the EU to avoid a No Deal Brexit.

Hi Impala

Fortunately the regulations are enforceable for cars purchased at distance, the cooling off period starts on the delivery of the car, you are entitled to return the car for full refund within 14 days. Distant sales under this regulation appears to be a legal saviour in this instance.

My dealer replied this afternoon also and they will be offering a full refund if import duty raises the price.

I need to check I can get a full refund if the same happens to me. Done the deal on the phone today with my local dealer so guess it’s not technically distance selling is it?

Hi Tigermad

So long you didn’t sign in the dealers or pay the deposit in the dealership, even better if you have never stepped foot in the dealers!

Hope that helps

It’s common knowledge. All over the internet. Nothing is confirmed though .....
