Seems bizarre to remove DAB for 2020 given the government wants us all to go DAB and release FM. Even my 2020 T-Cross has DAB!

Even more bizarre was the decision to include MW radio! What they ought to have done was to drop MW and keep DAB. Who bothers with medium wave these days?

Perhaps they'll reintroduce long wave next, with 6ft whip aerials... :-)

Last update. VW have told me the head unit in my car doesn't have a DAB receiver on board so not a question of inputting a code or updating software for DAB. They have apologised and suggested some workarounds using a mobile and Apple Carplay. I was exploring all this myself anyway. I asked VW for a free first service and they have agreed.

The lesson here is to check everything and get a verbal/written confirmation if possible or in doubt. And, be aware that Carwow specs can differ from VW.

Very unfortunate, DAB is such a basic function these days

No need to panic ... analogue radio (AM/FM) has been extended in the UK for a further decade until 2032.

DAB is amazingly patchy; around my house in the countryside outside Llandeilo it's fine and all around the small towns and villages. But go into Carmarthen and it dies away completely. Would think the opposite fine in a big town, rubbish in the countryside. They'll never be able to switch until the coverage is at least as good as FM, the original schedules were pie in the sky.

I agree that DAB is patchy but there are some radio stations only available in DAB or streaming. Is streaming going to be any less patchy than DAB?

My understanding is that streaming will be over an Internet connection provided via 3G/4G/5G mobile phone network, whereas DAB is broadcast from the same transmitters as digital TV.

Either or both can be patchy depending on where you are, which mobile network you use and the local topography such as hills, valleys, large structures etc.
