Nice Shiny Wheels

Post by brid » Thu Feb 28, 2019 9:48 pm

Have at last started to see the occasional T Roc in our town but each one I have seen so far has had wheel damage from touching kerbs.
From looking at the contour they do appear to project out from the tyre rim line and the scuffing is higher up on the "spoked" area rather that tyre level.

Apart from comments like "dont touch the kerb" . Any body got any experience or observations as a considered design fault and which rims style appears to be best?

Over-sized wheels are prone to kerb scuffs. Had an Audi with beautiful 19 in titanium alloys and they got scuffed despite my nursing them. Have the standard 17 in on my t-roc, the deeper tyre means the rubber kerbs not the metal. And it holds psi better.

I concur, I've got 17" low profiles on my Renault Megane (will become Thunderbird 2 tomorrow when my Roc arrives!!)
... 2 days after taking delivery, I managed to 'kerb' a wheel and took a chunk out of the tyre wall! :o cost me £120 :!:

The Roc has got 19" wheels so I'll have the cold sweats whenever I park it!! :) :) :)

Agree with T Roo, my car has the standard 17in wheels and as the tyres are not particularly low profile have had no problems. Bigger wheels must have lower profile tyres hence will always be vulnerable.

I am in the middle with 18" rims and only because there was not an option to have the 17" which I would have preferred as there is less risk of damage and also a bit more comfort with the added depth of rubber.
Curbs here are between 7 to 10 inches high so they do come quite a way up the wheel. Unless one is very alert in a non SUV you either scrub or deform the front skirt, play around with the tail pipes or scuff the wheels big time.

I have 235/45 R18 98V tyres on mine.. (winter M+S tyres and non-VW rims that I kept from the Beetle Dune) and haven’t had a problem. If you run into kerb, walls etc,etc you will damage you car... maybe the sangria is stronger in Alicante...

As has been mentioned. The larger the wheel size the lower profile the tyres (aspect ratio) to ensure the overall wheel/tyre size stays around the same. When replacing your tyres you can choose rim protector tyres. These have a projection in the rim area designed to touch the curb first, giving you the chance to adjust your angle hopefully before the alloy hits.

Another thing to bear in mind is the design of the alloys. Diamond cut wheels (normally silver alloy face and black or dark grey sides to the spokes) are a lot more expensive to refurbish then painted alloys, as any damage requires them to go back through the CNC process which can't be done mobile and has to be completed by a specialist. Single wheel cost around £120 (depending on your area) as apposed to around £70 (fixed site or mobile) for painted wheels.

Hope that helps.
