Chrome desktop view default on tablet

Post by Deleted user 925 » Sun Jun 13, 2021 5:41 pm

This has only appeared recently probably after an update 🤷‍♂️
My tablets chrome browser now selects desktop view by default which makes the content on Web pages smaller.
I have to click on the options tab and uncheck the desktop view constantly, it's a real pain 🙈

There doesn't seem to be anything I can do other than change my browser, which I don't want to do.
Any thoughts 🥴

Depending on how the forum handles device detection, you could see if you can download a Chrome plugin that will spoof your device’s “user agent” string. It’s a semi human-readable string that describes what the browser is, what version it is running, what the device OS is, etc.

So you’d just Google something like “iPhone 12 User Agent” (because that device would definitely get the mobile site) and copy the big long string into your spoofing plugin.

I haven’t actually done this but given that the forum doesn’t seem to be using the device width for detection, it’s reasonable to presume it is looking at the user agent.

Worth a shot at least.

Does this only affect the forum or does it happen with any/all/some web sites ?

It has to be a plug-in needed or similar I think. You don't say what tablet or what update, operating system or application.

No problems using chrome on my iPAD mini 4 since I've updated to the latest version of iOS (nor was there before mind).

A quick bit of research revealed that Chrome is going to use desktop mode on Android tablets if the screen size and resolution detected is large enough.

For those who don't want this, there is supposedly a method of disabling it as follows;

  • Enter the URL chrome://flags/#request-desktop-site-for-tablets
  • Change the option from "Default" to "Disabled" and restart Chrome.

I don't use Chrome or a tablet so I haven't been able to test this, but it might be worth a try.

Yes I did read on the Internet they were making it default on a certain screen size upwards but I don't understand why 🤷‍♂️

I think you might be on to something with that link 😉
The old tablet battery is flat, I'll try it tomorrow after work 👌

As for your other question, every Web site defaults to desktop view.

A 10.1" huawei M5 lite android.
It's the chrome browser app.
It has an update on a regular basis.

I think Impala might be on to something? 👌

A big thanks to Impala, that link you put up seems to have done the trick so far. 😁👌

I used it on my mobile phone this afternoon thinking it would scync all my devices that use chrome but it didnt, I had to change my tablet individually. 🤷‍♂️
