Slight noise on reversing

Post by Tigermad » Wed Dec 04, 2019 8:20 am

Morning. Hope you are all well!

I noticed yesterday that if I reverse slowly there is a slight noise. I am not sure where it is coming from. It is like the mooing brakes but it is nowhere near as loud as the videos I have seen. Can it be something else and not the mooing brakes? Thanks

in my case it also wasn't that loud but it happend several times and definitely sounded like the breaks.
Wasn't even an discussion with the dealer, breakes were replaced under warranty.

Well I have tried to book the car in and the dealership don’t have any courtesy cars and they never will have! How do I stand with this can I force them to give me a hire car? They need it for 2 days.

Most of the sales 'executives' drive cars which are used a demonstrators. If they can't provide a courtesy car, ask for one of the sales cars. They are usually not very clean, inside or out, but at least you get a set of wheels.

They should provide a car, especially if they need your car for 2 days!!
You can bet they claim for providing a car off VW Warranty...

Thanks. After a bit of moaning it’s booked in with a car from Friday. I was trying to explain to my husband about the mooing brake problem. Why does it happen in reverse and not while braking?

I'm no expert, but it probably has to do with either the way the brake pads are mounted, or how the edge of the pad makes contact with the disc.

Most of the time you use more force when braking going forwards, this beds in the pads and therefore they make good contact with the discs. In reverse, however, the force used is likely to be lower and the contact is less "assured", allowing either the disc or the pad to vibrate more. If the vibration isn't damped down then it may resonate, giving you a characteristic moo.

I've had a very slight moo once whilst reversing down the driveway with my foot lightly on the brakes - I have a DSG gearbox, making it more likely for me to select reverse and control the speed with the brake peddle.

I'm not sure what the fix is, but if they want the car for a couple of days it doesn't sound like a case of just changing the pads.
Regards,
Barry

Well the car has been fine last night and today so I have cancelled the booking for now unless it reappears. Can’t really afford time off sitting around and going to work late unnecessarily. I don’t think it was the moo. Maybe it was a bit of debris or nothing to do with the brake.

Occasionally when reversing onto the drive our car does this. The noise is not loud, annoying though when returning home late at night. Let us know what the dealer says.
