Whilst driving an automatic, the car suddenly has M1 on the dashboard with whirring noise which can last for quite a while, and then stops and goes back to drive. Has anyone else experienced this problem where I have done nothing and yet it happens.

Aling this same line, I have a 2022 automatic T-Roc 2.0. After stopping at a light I accellerated and the transmission revved very high and I saw on the dashboard it was in M1 gear. I had not touched any paddles on steering wheel nor used the gear shift. Panicking, I then wiggled the gear shift and it went into sport mode and worked fine (though I normally use normal drive mode). This has happened 3 times now. Guess I need to take it to dealer.

In case you don’t know this, pulling the DSG selector back towards you and then allowing it to return to the normal position is how you change from Normal to Sport and pushing it to the left is how to engage manual mode. In manual mode the selector does not return to its normal position, you must push it back toward the right so it’s once again vertical and centered.

It sounds like there is nothing wrong with your car and you may have accidentally move the selector to the left. You just need to familiarize yourself with the above.

I don’t recommend “wiggling” the selector like you would a manual gearbox shifter, the DSG selector is not designed to be wiggled and you could damage it.

I recommend trying out what I’ve suggested above one time before you set off.

On my car, 10 mph in 1st gear is a bit over 2000 rpm, so 40 mph would be over 8000 rpm and well over the red line. In fact, my rev counter only goes up to 8000. Perhaps you meant 40 kph which would be about 24 mph and 5000 rpm.

If you want to read about the controls and features on your car, I suggest you visit the web site liked below and enter your VIN number. That will give you online access to the owner's manual.

My post was to help you understand the comments from others. I strongly suspect there is a fault with the DSG in your car, so you need to take it to the dealer, explain what happened and ask them to check the car. I really don't think it was due to anything you did.

Thank you for this very comprehensive explanation. I shall have to study the script very carefully as to all the instruments and their functions as I do not want to have this driving experience which incorporated much whirring noise when in M1 and then back to D/S.

As indicated, I wasn't aware of moving anything on the dashboard or the gear stick whilst the car was in motion. It is placed in drive mode and off we go. Hopefully. I was never made aware of a manual function.

Cars become ever more complex, and all we wish to do is drive safely!

If he's knocked it into manual shift some how, what's this noise he's talking about 🤔

Surely you'd notice the rev counter shoot up if this noise was just the engine revving, it was in first gear after all 🤔 40mph as well!

Anyone know what the rev counter would be hitting in 1st at 40mph with a DSG?

No way would the DSG allow you to go into 1st gear at 40mph. If it is, there is definitely a fault. At 40mph I’m usually in 4th or even 5th. Even flapping the paddles or pushing the DSG selector into the manual mode gate, you’d remain in the same gear or be 1 below (or above).

Unless you were slowing/accelerating and you flapped the left paddle just after the car shifted down (which has happened to me quite often) but even then, at 40mph you’d be in 2nd at the absolute least in that situation.

If it reverts to drive (D) by itself it sounds like you inadvertently pressed the gear shift 'paddles' on the steering wheel. On the back of the steering wheel, one left to change down, one right to change up.

As I say, if you shifted the gearstick sideways to manual, it would stay in manual shift until you moved it back. If you use the paddles after a period it will revert to automatic.

Apparently it’s a really bad habit and can lead to early failure of the selector. It does not have much vertical support like a manual gear stick so putting vertical weight on it can damage the track.

Thank you for your swift response. The car is 2022. Speed would have been about 40 mph. I dont know about gear shift paddles as the car is new to me. I think it would be best to have the dealer test the software. Everything being electronic these days. It is quite worrying when it happens.

The paddles are at the back of your steering wheel but very clearly visible and easily accessible (as they should be). Best you familiarise yourself with them before chatting with the dealer about this issue.

If I were a betting man I'd say you've inadvertently nudged the paddles or shifter.

No. Never had it and haven't heard any reports on this forum.

M1 means the the DSG is in manual mode and 1st gear is selected. What speed were you doing when this happened ? Does your car have gear-shift paddles on the steering wheel ? Anything fouling the DSG selector lever ?

What age is your car ? If it is still covered by warranty then you should take it to a dealer workshop to have it checked and perhaps have the DSG software updated or reset.
